During a North Carolina fall, you may be relying on your AC and your heater in the same 24 hours! While it’s nice to have the option to keep cool or cozy, there are a few steps you can take to make sure switching back and forth between your heater and AC doesn’t take a massive toll on your energy bills.

IS IT OKAY TO SWITCH BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN MY HEATER AND AC?

First and foremost, it is absolutely okay to switch back and forth between your home’s heating system and air conditioning system. In our region of the U.S. and in areas further south, this practice is just a way of life, especially with extreme weather conditions becoming more common.

3 TIPS FOR SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN YOUR HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM

While you want to keep comfortable, it’s also important to conserve energy when switching between your systems and avoid any unnecessary strain on the equipment. Keep these tips in mind when you need to switch from one system to the other.

1. Set the thermostat to “auto.”

If your thermostat is set to “on,” then the fan will just keep running until you manually turn it off. You want your thermostat to be set to “auto” so that your system will shut off when your home reaches the temperature on the thermostat.

2. Let the cycle finish completely.

It’s important not to interrupt your heating or cooling system’s current cycle when you want to switch to the other system. Allow the equipment to finish running. Once it shuts off, set your thermostat to “off” so that it won’t turn on again. Wait 5 minutes, and then turn on the system you would like to run.

3. Don’t crank up the thermostat.

You might be tempted to set the thermostat to an ultra-high or ultra-low temperature to get your system to work “faster.” Even if you own a variable speed system, there’s a limit to how fast your system can heat or cool your home. By setting your thermostat to an extreme temperature, your system will end up running for longer than it needs to, using up additional energy and accumulating unnecessary wear and tear.
