Has Your Boiler Reached Its Boiling Point?

Boiler problems can lead to major issues if they’re left unchecked, so it’s essential that you keep an eye on your heating system and go through boiler troubleshooting steps if necessary. Even if it’s not a dangerous situation, you can risk being left in the cold if you don’t promptly take care of these issues.

  • Check the electric or gas supply – Make sure your equipment is getting the power supply it’s supposed to. Is your electric out? If it’s a gas-powered boiler, make sure the stopcock is open to allow gas to flow through. If it is open and the gas supply is still an issue, contact your gas company.
  • Pilot light issues – If your pilot light isn’t working, start by following the instructions that came with the boiler. The pressure setting may be off, so ensure that it’s set in line with the instructions. If you’re still having issues, contact an HVAC professional.
  • Thermostat control – The thermostat could be the culprit if you’re having problems with a boiler. First, check to ensure that the temperature setting is high enough to trigger the boiler to turn on. If you’re using a timer setting on the thermostat, conduct a test to ensure it’s working. If these steps don’t work, you may need your thermostat calibrated.
  • Valve problems – If the boiler has a thermostatic valve, adjust it to ensure the boiler switches on. If you’re dealing with a lock shield valve, you’ll need to remove the cover before adjusting it.
  • Condensate pipe issues – Defrosting the condensate pipe could be all you need to get a malfunctioning boiler working again.
