Fall Maintenance Tasks:
- Check to see that air is allowed to freely circulate through your home. Clean dust from ceiling fans, baseboard heaters, and air returns. Make sure heating and cooling vents aren’t obstructed by drapes or furniture.
- Look in the crawl space below the house to make sure it’s free of mold, standing water, and wildlife.
- Have the heating system inspected to ensure it’s working properly. A regularly maintained system will be more efficient and effective, saving energy and making it less likely that you’ll be left in the cold.
- Change the air filter in the furnace, check the pilot light, and make sure there’s an appropriate amount of ventilation.
- Have the fireplace flue and liners cleaned to prevent the buildup of creosote.
- Inspect the roof for missing or damaged shingles, and replace as needed. Clean gutters and downspouts, making sure they’re attached securely.
- If you have any interior painting on your to-do list, get it done before the weather gets too cold so you can leave windows open for adequate ventilation.
- Insulate, weatherstrip and caulk to keep the cold out. Replace old insulation, add weatherstripping around doors, and caulk exterior joints around windows and vents.
