R-22 Phase Out

By January 1, 2020 R-22 will be completely phased out, it will not be produced anymore. This means that no new R-22 will be allowed in the US. Recycled or reused R-22 will still be allowed, but the cease of production will result in a shrinking supply of the refrigerant.

R-22 Phase Out: What You Should Know Graphic

Here's what you need to know:

What is R-22?

R-22 is a chemical compound that is commonly used as a refrigerant in HVAC systems. R-22 plays a crucial role in controlling the temperature of your indoor air.

What is the issue with R-22?

It is the old standard for residential air conditioners and is now being phased out by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA has determined that R-22 has a negative impact on ozone in the atmosphere.

When will R-22 go away?

In 2020, R-22 will no longer be produced or imported. R-22 can still be used after 2020, there will just be a limited supply due to the stop of production. As a result, the cost of servicing units that require R-22 is expected to rise.

How can I tell if my unit is R-22?

You should be able to tell by carefully reading the manufacturer’s label on your outdoor unit. If you are still unsure if your system uses R-22 you can call us at Logan and we can help.

I saw on the news that R-22 is illegal, is that true?

This is a little bit misleading. The important thing to note here is that the production of R-22 will no longer be legal, however, the use and possession of R-22 will still be permitted with proper certifications and licenses. It is important to select a reliable contractor. Technicians must have EPA Section 608 certification to service equipment containing R-22.
