Boost Energy Efficiency and Keep Costs Under Control

Friday, September 22nd, 2017 by Mark Hollingsworth

Energy Efficiency Tips

Heating and cooling account for almost half of all home energy use. Paying attention to how you use heating and cooling appliances can reduce energy usage and save hundreds of dollars a year on utility bills. Energy

  1. Why run the air conditioner when you don’t need it? Set the temperature to 78 degrees when you are at home, but change it at night and when you are away. Changing the temperature by at least 10 degrees for eight hours saves between 5 and 15 percent on utility bills, amounting to approximately 1 percent for each degree of set-back. Programmable thermostats can be set to automatically change the temperature back to normal before you return home or wake up.
  2. Add ceiling fans. Fans make a room feel cooler by circulating air. When combined with air conditioning, the cooling effect of fans allows the temperature to be set back 4 degrees. When temperatures are moderate, fans may provide enough cooling so that air conditioning is not needed.
  3. Keep your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit in good working order. Dirty air filters are the primary reason air conditioners break down. A clean filter keeps air circulating freely throughout the system and keeps dust from settling on coils and other elements. Annual tune-ups examine all elements of a unit and ensure that everything works properly, reducing air conditioning repairs, prolonging the life of the unit and saving energy.
  4. Landscaping with shade trees, shrubs and trellises can lower temperatures around a building by up to 9 degrees and keep inside temperatures lower, saving up to 25 percent on energy usage. Roof temperatures can reach up to 190 degrees. Shading a building’s roof can lower roof temperatures dramatically, reduce solar gain and save energy.
  5. Use products with the Energy Star label. The Energy Star program evaluates the energy efficiency of household and commercial products. Energy Star also certifies new homes and building materials that meet stringent energy efficient requirements. Replacing older heating and air conditioning units with energy-efficient models saves energy and money.
  6. Run heat-generating appliances like clothes dryers and dishwashers at night, or air dry. Running appliances when temperatures are cooler reduces load on air conditioners.
